Storage Tips

Determining what type of storage unit you will need.  
Climate control, double insulated or drive up storage

Climate controlled storage are our premium units that are specially designed to store sensitive items such as antiques, finer furniture, books/paper, artwork/paintings, pharmaceuticals or anything else you want safely stored in a space without the risk of freezing or blistering temperatures.  Climate control maintains a steady temperature of 55 degrees in winter months and 80 degrees in summer months using central air conditioning and heat.

Double insulated units are inside units without the benefit of central air conditioning and heat.  These units can best be equated to your standard attached car garage. 

Regular units with drive up access work great for storing items not sensitive to storage and temperature. This helps to insulate your things from the damage that severe hot or extreme cold weather can cause to items stored in storage units.

Determining what packing supplies you’ll need when storing your items:
We have a wide range of moving and packing supplies for sale at discounted prices in our stores.  Items such as wrapping paper, bubble wrap, tape, rope, drop cloths, moving blankets, furniture & mattress covers & boxes and more.

Always fill your containers and boxes to capacity:  
Protect your fragile goods by wrapping them in protective paper or bubble wrap.  It’s a great idea to pack and place them near the top of your storage space. Partially full or bulging boxes may tip or collapse.  Use peanuts, bubble wrap or newspaper to fill empty space.

Label boxes:

For easy reference, keep a list of labeled boxes at your home or office for quick reference when you need to locate your items.

Pack the storage unit carefully:

Leave air space around the perimeter to help with ventilation.  If possible, place a pallet on the concrete floors and do not lean items up against the walls. Leave a walkway to the rear of your space for easy access. Use all the space available, including the height and place frequently used goods near the door.

Specific self storage tips for some of the most commonly stored items:
Appliances: A refrigerator or freezer should be thoroughly dry and stored with its door slightly ajar for ventilation.  Boxes can be stacked on top of stoves, refrigerators, and freezers. Make sure that stoves and cooking equipment are cleaned before they are stored.

Bicycles and Other Metal Items:
To help retard rust, wipe all metal surfaces with a cloth containing a few drops of machine oil.

Books and Documents:
 Books should be placed flat in storage box or container to protect their spines. Do not place boxes directly on concrete floors, but use pallets or skids to prevent moisture absorption. Use packing materials such as peanuts or wrapping paper to fill all empty pockets in the boxes. Do not pack fragile items in the same box with books and do not overload.

Clothing, Curtains, Bedding, Drapes and Linens:
 It is suggested that clothing, curtains and drapes be stored on hangers. If you prefer not to use hanging cartons, such items should be carefully folded and stored in dresser drawers or cedar chests along with bedding and linens. We sell wardrobe style cardboard boxes, which help protect your clothes. Food crumbs or stains should be removed before storing and avoid anything that may attract pests.

Glassware and Dishes:
Place a layer of form or bubble cushion inside the bottom and the top of the boxes containing glassware.  All glass items should be individually wrapped.  Nest bowls and cups and stand plates, sauces, and platters on edge. Wrapped glasses should be placed near the top of cartons. For best protection, use packing materials such as peanuts or wrapping paper to fill all empty pockets in the boxes. Label all boxes containing glassware “Fragile”, and do not place heavy items on boxes containing glassware.

Place plastic sheet, a wood pallet or corrugated cardboard mat on the floor of your unit and stand sofas and mattresses on its end. Keep upholstery off the floor. Dissemble beds and tables and wrap table legs in fabric or paper. If a table cannot be dissemble, place padding on the floor and place the table on its top with the legs pointing up. Use dresser tops for stacking cartons and dresser drawers for linens or small, delicate items. Most lightweight chairs can be stacked "seat to seat" or placed upside down on tables that are not disassembled. Finally, place a light weight cotton (e.g. a bed sheet) dust cover on your furniture.  We sell various plastic furniture covers for your convenience.

Holiday Decorations:
 Whenever possible use the original cartons that contained delicate ornaments. Pad the ornaments with packing paper or wrapping paper.  Strings of lights can be wrapped around a piece of cardboard before placing in a carton lined with packing paper.

Wrap large lamp bases in padding, wrap smaller lamps then place them in boxes. Pack delicate lamp shades separately. Do not use newsprint to wrap lamp shades or any other goods that may be damaged by ink stains. Do not store heavy items on cartons containing lamps or lamp shades.

Mirrors, Windows, and Screens:
 These items should not be stored flat, but on its edge.

Records and Photographs:
 Records should be stored on edges to prevent the vinyl from warping. When moving a record player, the turntable and the tone arm and should be secured to prevent damage.

Tools: Metal tools should be cleaned and wiped with a cloth containing a few drops of machine oil to help retard rust. Long handled tools such as shovels, rakes and hoes should be clean, lightly oiled and tied into a bundle.

How long do I have to keep my storage unit?
We offer month to month leases, meaning no long term contracts and no commitment.

When can I have access to my belongings?
At the Clemmonsville, Westpoint Blvd and University location, the gate access hours are from 6:00 am - 10:00 pm, 7 days a week and 365 days per year.

Some of our facilities offer 24 hour* gate access.
The General office hours are:
*Mon-Sat 9:00 am - 6:00 pm
*Sun 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
*Office and gate hours vary at each location. 
Check the location nearest you for actual hours.

How much notice to must be given when I move out?
As soon as you know, would be helpful.  However, a 10 day written or verbal notice would be sufficient for move out notification. Full details on the vacating policy will be provided for you at the time of move-in.

Do you have someone to help move and pack for me?
Although we do not offer a mover or help with packing, we have information on local and international moving companies. Please contact one of our facilities near you for more information.

How can I make a payment?
Payments can be sent by mail, in person or by phone using a major credit or debit card. For your convenience, most of our facilities are equipped with a payment drop box for checks and money orders. You may also arrange to have your payments automatically deducted from your credit card or debit card monthly.  Please ask the manager about this feature.

What sizes do you have and how much do they cost?
We have a wide variety of unit sizes to meet your needs. Unit sizes and prices vary by location. Please contact a Moore Self Storage professional or you can request information from our “Contact Us” section on this website.

How do I calculate how much storage space to rent?
If you're not sure, our expert managers can assist you in determining the right size. Just give us a brief description of what will be stored and we'll help you determine how much space is needed.

What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express! Please ask about our credit card auto-pay program!

Do you sell Locks, Packing and Moving supplies?
Yes, we sell high quality locks with a Lifetime Warranty at a discounted price! We also offer boxes and an assortment of moving supplies. Ask about our 10% discount on moving boxes and moving supplies when purchased the day of lease signing.


Whether you are planning to store business or personal belongings, it's important to insure them. 

We offer Bader Insurance for as little as $8.00 a month for $2,000 of coverage. 

Keep in mind, that your valuables placed in self storage aren't generally covered by other policies such as homeowner or rental insurance. 

Check your policy or call your insurance agent for verification.
